Any ideas about the crimson SC flag stickers?

2. Then they're awfully confused

since Citadel are the pale blue Bulldogs. SC State are the red Bulldogs; could it be them?

As I'm in Columbia, it would be pretty odd for there to be untold number of Citadel Palmetto flags and practically no Carolina ones. Maybe I'm just crimson-garnet colorblind.:)

3. The USC flags I've seen

are garnet and black, divided diagonally. My guess about the crimson ones would be SC State. I am currently employed in Clemson country and all I see around here are the orange ones. Isn't the red state flag used by the Citadel a relic of the Civil War?

4. Dunno, but welcome to DU!

To clarify (in case it was unclear), I'm not talking about flags but about bumper/window stickers. There's an outfit in Columbia called Palmetto Productions (or something like that) in the business of outfitting preppies and their SUVs with Palmetto flag emblazoned golf shirts and stickers, respectively. The stickers vary in background color (as you say, the Clemson ones are orange) but I never see garnet unless either they or I are colorblind. Regardless, welcome; post more!

7. Wellllllll, that's a little complicated

How to put up an avatar (that's what the little pictures are called) is relatively uncomplicated. You just back out to the Lobby, scroll to the top of the page, choose Options, choose Edit Your Profile and then Avatar image. Unfortunately, only donors get to use their own avatars, so you have to choose from among the ones already available, which do not include Veterans for Peace (but do represent an astonishingly broad selection). However, though I can't speak for the admins, I'm pretty sure that they'd want such an avatar to be available. So what you'll want to do is start a thread in Ask the Admins asking Skinner if he can include such an avatar. It helps if you can provide artwork and helps a lot if it's already 48 x 48. Unfortunately, you can't expect extremely speedy action; the admins are pretty busy cats. Also, you probably can't start your own thread until you post a few more times, so you might want to hie over to GD or the Lounge and express some opinions on a few random threads.

9. Not a relic from the War of Northern Agression....

My great grandfather, grandfather, father, many uncles and cousins went to The Citadel. I had a provisional appointment to The Citadel but decided it was not for me as far as college goes.
I have lived in Massachusetts for MANY years, but I believe the red state flag has its history in the confederate battle flag. The Citadel used to wave the battle flag all over the place. Football games, basketball games, etc. Rightly so, the emblem was removed because it is offensive. Some people were pissed, so they came up with an alternative flag. A red SC state flag. It is pretty much a Citadel thing. Am I right?

that was why I was asking. I do know that Citadel students were among the first to fire at Ft. Sumter and I vaguely recall something about this flag being the one they flew as they did this; however I may be wrong.
Yes, the only people I know of who display the red version of the state flag are associated with the Citadel.

I have sent an inquiry to the Citadel asking them about this. I will post their response when it arrives.

11. I have an answer

Although the Citadel did not respond, I did send an inquiry to the Chair of Southern Studies at the University of South Carolina. Here is the question I posed:

My question about SC history concerns the red SC flag used by the Citadel. Does this flag date back to the Civil War? I have heard that it was used by the Citadel cadets when they were firing upon Ft. Sumter. However, someone told me that this flag was adopted quite recently to replace the use of the Confederate battle flag at Citadel sporting events. Could you shed some light on this?


Here is his response:

It is a Civil War Flag and was used by the Citadel Cadets when they went into battle with Union forces in SC. It is the school's regimental flag and has been for some time.


BTW, I was never taught to use the term "The War of Northern Aggression", but "The War Between the States."

14. A question in response to your statement

Your statement: "Guess you were not born in Charleston." Makes me wonder if you are doubting the credibility of the answer given to me my the professor from USC or was in reference to the term by which I was taught to describe the Civil War. BTW, I was born and raised in Columbia (you know, the place where the secession convention was held), but for the last five years I have resided in the upstate.

I have many friends from Charleston and some of them are genuine SOBs; and, if you know anything about Charleston, you should know that I am not calling them Sons of Bitches. Some of them do use the term "War of Northern Aggression", but they are all associated with the Citadel. The others I know do not use this term. Some, however, do use the term "The War for Confederate Independence".

I have known and worked with many Citadel graduates over the years and can state categorically that many, but not all, can be rather sensitive (or proud, depending on the individual) about such issues as the Civil War and their school's role in it.

In conclusion, after the response from the Chair of Southern Studies at USC, I think the red SC flag used by the Citadel in lieu of the Confederate battle flag at sporting events is nothing more than "old wine in a new bottle."

15. Not trying to fight here.....

My response was only to your comment regarding the term "War of Northern Agression." I was never taught that expression either. It was just one that was used from time to time. I still remember SC history, pounded into my head from 1st grade, as I am sure you do to!

I was doubting your credibility at all. Yes, I was indeed born and raised in Charleston and grew up within spitting distance of The Citadel. Good grief, I spent nearly every Saturday at Citadel football games (I won't bore you with the Friday afternoon parades!)

Anyway, your points of it being "old wine..." is very apt. It is essentially a veiled replacement of the battle flag. Seems rather racist to me. Am I right?

For the record, I have lived in Boston since 1986. As I like to say, "Southerner by birth, Yankee by choice."

It must be kinda tough living upstate, with all the repukes. Keep up the good fight.

18. I didn't want to fight either

I have lived in SC my entire life except for my time in the USMC (1975-81) and as a graduate student who was awarded a grant to attend the Martin Luther University in Halle, Germany from 1993-1996.

My time in the Marine Corps taught me (or brainwashed me, whichever term is appropriate) to think of myself as an American first, then as someone from SC. I remain in SC because someone has to hold the line against certain elements, although I do feel I am waging a loosing battle at times. I remain in SC because it is my home and I do love my home no matter how infuriating it can be sometimes.

I apologize for assuming that you were someone from Mass. who was painting all of us from SC with the same brush with the comment "War of Northern Aggression"; it did appear to me that you were trying to egg me on.

BTW, my great uncle was a Citadel graduate, class of 1913 and my uncle was in the class of 1957.

In addition to my time as an enlisted Marine, I also served in the SC National Guard as an officer from 1981-1990 and encountered many Citadel grads. My opinion of them varies from excellent officers all the way down the scale to absolute pinheads who could do nothing more than spout their own propaganda.

In conclusion, I would shake your hand and say "no hard feelings" if we were not 900 miles apart.

Gee, South Carolina sure has changed from when I was a kid (or maybe I have changed). There are so many times I think of moving back to Charleston. I have to admit that truthfully i am bit a scared of what SC has become. It is good to hear that is not as red as I fear it is.
I have even heard of the group that wants to have SC become a religious homeland of sorts and secede from the union.
