AAR coming to Charleston as "Progressive 730"
http://ltradio.blogspot.com/2004/12/progressive-730-comes-to-charleston-sc.html

This one completely slid in under the radar. Looks like Clear Channel's WSCC-AM (730) will split from it's more conservative sister (WSCC-FM 94.3) and become an Air America affiliate.

The flip is slated for December 16.

The FM will stay put with Limbaugh and company.

730AM broadcasts with a directional 5200 watt signal during the day, but powers down to 103 watts at night (many stations farther down the AM dial do this, since they are much more powerful than the ones higher up the dial). The daytime signal covers much of the South Carolina coast, while the nighttime signal is pretty much local only.

You can find out more about the signal here.

1. That's incredible.
I listened to AM730 (to hate it, of course) for the years I lived there. I especially enjoyed Michael Graham's (usually crappy and inane) show. If AAR can take over a station like this one, in a state like SC, then there may be a real revolution in talk radio in the near future. I'm so happy for all you Charleston DUers! Now let's see how long it takes them to get to Bloomington, IN.

my little old town up here north of Indianapolis!!! :)

Let's hope! :bounce:

6. Do you get WSAI (1530) out of Cincinnati?
Edited on Wed Dec-08-04 11:36 PM by Fighting Irish
Very strong rumors about AAR landing there after Christmas. Supposedly, it comes in well across the eastern part of the country after dark, and it even has pretty decent daytime range.

I have gotten 1530 in Wisconsin after dark, and once picked up 1690 out of Atlanta as well up here.

7. You know I'm not sure.
I don't listen to much talk radio since most of it is right-wing conservative stuff. I try to tune in sometimes but really I don't get very strong reception around here. Sometimes, late at night or early morning when I work nights I go to my vehicle at work on my break and try to tune in and see what's on. Most of it seems to be stuff like Art Bell and alien conspiracy nuts! However, one night, I was fortunate enough to catch Matt Savinar on some radio show talking about oil depletion. I was excited! It was on 730AM or something close. I never did catch it again.

I'll try to pick up 1530 some night. Thanks.

8. 1530 currently airs a format called 'real oldies'
It's basically 50's-60's oldies with a little Frank Sinatra-type stuff thrown in. Currently, they're playing lots of Xmas music, like many other Clear Channel stations.

Hopefully, that will help you find it.

730 in Charleston probably doesn't get all the way up to Indiana (it's a very directional signal that targets mostly the SC coast). You could be picking up a different 730AM.

9. Well, they didn't exactly take it over
Clear Channel moved much of the 730 lineup to an FM frequency not too long ago. The two stations are currently airing the same lineup as a simulcast. The switch on 730 splits the two into different stations, with lib talk on 730 and Limbaugh, Hendrie, Beck, etc. on the stronger 94.3 FM.

3. Air America isn't taking over anything....CC just thinks they can
make some money, but they are apparently pressuring people like Randi Rhodes not to talk about voting fraud/election.

I think AA going to these CC stations is a VERY POOR MOVE LONGTERM.

10. CC needs AAR as much as AAR needs CC
Edited on Thu Dec-09-04 09:45 AM by Fighting Irish
If not more.

If CC decided to pull AAR off it's stations, I'm sure AAR would have no problem replacing them in the affected markets. AAR is getting strong ratings in desireable demographics that these AM stations would never get otherwise. In short, AAR has saved some dying signals that would otherwise be afterthoughts in the CC game plan, airing stuff that would otherwise get little to no ratings in much older demographics (the ones that ad agencies won't touch).

Liberal talk has done what few other formats have done - it's brought younger listeners to the AM dial. This is beyond remarkable. Still wondering what CC's interest in liberal talk is?

AAR has established itself in many of the markets where they're carried by CC stations. I'm sure some other competing broadcaster with a dying AM signal would pounce immediately if CC decided to drop liberal talk due to a political agenda or some nonsense reason.

As long as the money rolls in, CC will carry liberal talk programming.

12. In reply about Clear Channel
Clear Channel is not stupid. They know there is a market here because of the University, and Charleston is more upscale than it has ever been. People are coming from all over to retire or to just freaking move here. Lots of the area is overpopulated (Mt Pleasant for example) where I currently live.
So to further answer your question CC realizes a need probably because a lot of people do protest the war in Iraq and remember Bush did not win by that much, and we still don't know if he really did. So this would help define the reasoning behind their decision. I also heard they were going to be puting AAR in a number of new markets but I had no idea this would be one of them. I am ecstatic.
