ACTION NEEDED
now through 2:00 PM Friday, Feb 11
From SD Peace and Justice Center
Smokeout of SB 205 was not attempted Thursday. Bill proponents are still cultivating support to ensure smokeout passage on the senate floor Friday. You can help. Extra urging needed from constituents of Sen Dave Knudson (Sioux Falls) Sen Garry Moore (Yankton) Sen Jay Duenwald (Hoven)
Wednesday Senate Local Government Committee voted 5-2 to kill SB 205, a bill to preserve the right of referendum for county residents who object to a decision by their county officials to permit a CAFO (Concentrated Animal Feeding Operation).
SB 205 can still be rescued, but it will take action by hundreds of South Dakotans who refuse to let misguided senators sell off our land and our democracy for a ruinous mess of CAFOs. A "smokeout" of SB 205 will send it BACK to the Local Govt Committee to reconsider their Wednesday vote. Many good bills have been rescued in the past by smokeout.
An avalanche of constituent input is needed to pull off this smokeout. Call to have a page take down your message and deliver it to your senator's desk 605/773-3821

Tell your senator: Preserve local democracy.
Stand up for family-scale agriculture.
Support the smokeout of SB 205.
Now that the federal court has trashed Amendment E, local referendum is the ONLY MEANS LEFT in our system for safeguarding family-scale agriculture from being displaced by CAFOs.
