Stephanie Herseth and Larry Diedrich tried to claim ground with senior citizens, ranchers and American Indians on Wednesday in the first House race debate broadcast statewide.
Herseth, a Democrat, and Diedrich, a Republican, face each other in a special election on Tuesday, June 1. They will meet again in the November general election.
They are competing to serve the remaining four months of Republican Bill Janklow's term. Janklow resigned in January.
Herseth put tweaks to the new Medicare reform at the top of her to-do list, if elected.
