PIERRE, S.D. -- A South Dakota political group said yesterday that it is asking an out-of-state organization to drop a petition drive that, if successful, would give voters a say on the state's new abortion ban.

Focus: South Dakota said it wants to spearhead its own petition drive to put the abortion measure on the November ballot, and has asked Basic-Abortion-Rights Network of Waukesha, Wis., to withdraw.
"It's a loose group of individuals who were sitting around and thought it would be a good idea to do this," said Jim Robinson, treasurer for Focus: South Dakota. ''They're not organized, and we asked them to withdraw the petition because we want this to be a totally South Dakota operation. They were leaning towards doing that."

This kind of action makes getting petion signatures for the Save Our Vote process even more important.
