Visiting your state this summer

Family of five... the youngest turns five this month. What are some of things you'd recommend for us to do/see? (We are definitely going to see Mt. Rushmore.)

1. I would definitely go to Crazy Horse Mountain, that's much better,

and far more meaningful, than Rushmore; in addition to the mountain carving-in-progress, it has a native museum, cultural center, and a fantastic gift shop. You can also take a bus ride to the base of the mountain.

There are so many other things to do in the Black Hills area that I don't even know where to begin. There's Custer State Park, the Wildlife Loop, the Mammoth Site, Jewel Cave and Wind Cave (the second and fourth largest caves in the world, respectively), Bear Country and Reptile Gardens, and on and on. Try to stay away from the kitschy touristy stuff, it's not really worth it and it doesn't show the beauty and majesty of the Black Hills area.
