CHATTANOOGA (AP) -- Gov. Bredesen's call to overhaul the nation's Medicaid program is getting a positive response from two Democratic candidates running for the U.S. Senate.
Congressman Harold Ford, Jr. of Memphis said it sounds positive, and added that he's fighting Republican efforts in Congress to cut the program.
State Sen. Rosalind Kurita of Clarksville said Medicaid is simply not working in states like Tennessee. She said a program is needed to help poor people with health care while allowing states to balance their budgets.
In a national radio address last Saturday, Bredesen called for a program that requires co-payments from enrollees, prioritizes spending on the most important things first and excludes funding for new drugs that are only marginally more effective than existing ones.
