HAROLD FORD CALLS ON PRESIDENT FOR NEW IRAQ STRATEGIES

CONGRESSMAN HAROLD FORD
CALLS ON PRESIDENT FOR NEW IRAQ STRATEGIES
AS PRESIDENT PREPARES FOR NATIONAL ADDRESS

WASHINGTON, D.C. – In preparation for President George Bush’s televised national address tonight, Congressman Harold Ford released the following statement today:

“As President Bush prepares for a national address tonight about our efforts in Iraq, I will suggest a few things to him based on the feedback I’m getting from Tennesseans and what I saw on the ground in Iraq over the Memorial Day weekend.

“Progress is being made in Iraq at a much slower pace than the Bush Administration would have us believe. There is plenty to be proud of in Iraq, but our progress is overshadowed by a lack of candor from Secretary Rumsfeld and his political team at the Pentagon. If the American people continue to lose confidence in our efforts in Iraq, we could end up with an undesired outcome there. We must achieve stability in Iraq and begin bringing our troops home. To do this, some new ideas and directions are needed in Iraq.

“Here are my suggestions:

”First, the President should be frank with us about the grim and tough situation on the ground. The leadership of General Petraeus, Commander of the Multinational Security Transition Command in Iraq and the person charged with training the Iraqi military and police forces, is inspiring. General Petraeus and General Abizaid, Commander in Chief of U.S. Central Command, represent the best our country has to offer. They are experienced, honest, respected, tough and creative leaders who should be given all the resources required to finish the effort in Iraq honorably. Unfortunately, President Bush, Vice President Cheney and Secretary Rumsfeld too often undercut our senior military leadership with rhetoric inconsistent with realities on the ground in Iraq. For example, last week Vice President Cheney asserted that the insurgent activity in Iraq was in its final stages. Later the same week, General Abizaid, before the Senate Armed Services Committee, was forced to contradict the Vice President’s declaration. When asked pointedly if Vice President Cheney was incorrect, General Abizaid said, in short, yes. To fix this, the President should ask his subordinates in Washington to defer to the senior military serving on the ground to provide all progress assessments much like General Franks and General Abizaid did while combat operations were underway in Iraq.

“In addition, some new strategies are needed to help General Petraeus train the Iraqi military and security forces. I have recommended that consideration be given to sending Iraqi trainees to police and military training academies in Europe and the United States. To instill the character, discipline and integrity in soon to be Iraqi military officers, a very focused and tested training must take place. I, of course, would defer to Generals Abizaid, Casey and Petraeus on this proposal.

“Second, the President must pledge to do more to train and equip our soldiers for the missions they will be assigned in Iraq, so many of them are performing in areas with insufficient training. We unnecessarily put soldiers in harm’s way and curtail chances of success if soldiers are not properly trained and lack the equipment for success. Moreover, the President should urge the Pentagon to rescind any contract it may have signed with a private contractor to collect confidential data on high schools students to improve targeting recruitment efforts for the military. The reason the Army’s recruitment efforts are consistently down has more to do with the need for better and more honest policies in Iraq than it does with the need for better marketing plans.

“Finally, more help is needed to help build Iraq’s water, sewer and electricity infrastructure. The Iraqi people are measuring our military’s progress by two things: reduced insurgent activity and restoring - and in some cases starting - electricity and water. I urge the President’s attention to these matters.

“I will be watching the President closely on Tuesday night to hear him address these and other concerns about our failing policies on the ground in Iraq. This country is the greatest in the world because of our history of and willingness to defend freedom and defeat foes of it anywhere and at anytime. Iraq is a great test of that. And to pass this test, and we will pass, it is time to acknowledge that our strategy in Iraq is no longer working effectively and offer new approaches. I’ve given some ideas and so have others. It is now time that the President tell the American people, especially the families with loved ones serving in Iraq and those with loved ones on their way back to Iraq soon, his ideas on how we will win there.”

3. Yeah, I'm glad
I WANT to like him, but he's got to be more of a Democrat and less of a Repub-Lite. There's got to be a way to be a moderate and yet not get into bed with the Bushies.

5. Come on

Have you read any of the posts about him on this board? Some took it upon themselves to call him Repub-lite, in which I responded with the facts and they saw he is not as conservative as you think. Just take a peak at some of the previous posts about him and you will see that.

Also, I urge you to take into consideration that people do have a difference of opinion sometimes; that doesn't make them a turncoat or a Republican either.

8. I probably mistake his politeness (which I greatly admire)
with being compliant, when all he's doing is using sugar instead of vinegar to make a point (southern gentleman that he is). Thanks for the encouragement to check out his actual votes, etc. because I've seriously considered him a potential Dem rising star and it's been discouraging to read reports of his conservative record (which may end up being wrong).

9. Yes
He is very laid back and not combative as some are. As you can see by the links I posted in this thread, Harold has been a critic of this admin and war for 2 years or more now. When they make a mistake, he calls them out on it and lays his vision forth.

There are only a handful of things that he is conservative on such as school prayer. However, check out his NRA rating, his environmental record, and other areas such as social security and medicare--he is a top tier Democrat.

First of all, I'm in this thread because I clicked on it from the Latest page. I didn't even look what forum it's in.

Second, unless Harold's been thankfully downgraded to your state Congressman, he's in the federal Congress and therefore all of the US is his jurisdiction. If one is affected by the decisions of the Congress, then one is affected by Harold Ford.

Third, thanks for the links to his letters advising the president on how to better fight the war in Iraq. I'm sure Harold would have done it better and more consistently to US national interests, as would have Spongebob Squarepants or my next-door neighbor. Which way did he vote, consistently? How many jingoist jingles have I heard him sing to Judy Woodruff? Please.

17. I have no clue what I said that was "inappropriate"
And I don't accept your definition of "inappropriate". I never meant any offense and I stand by everything I said.

And don't worry, I have plenty of criticism for the Democrats you mention. However, in the tenor of his speeches and interviews, few have been more DINO, more aquiescent to the Bush jingoism, than Ford. And let's not mention school prayer and stuff like that.

As far as this "honor" you mention, I believe that is the problem. It is one of those amorphous, ambiguous concepts which only prolong death and suffering in wars of agression. "Peace with Honor" -- sound familiar? Richard nixon.

The honor of American Foreign Policy was lost the moment the first bomb fell on Baghdad. That honor is not salvageable without years of a changed foreign policy as a productive global citizen. And when those like Ford start talking to me about "we can't pull out now" it makes me want to barf. How many more Americans and Iraqis have to die before the inevitable happens? Can you think of any examples of invasions akin to this one that was eventually pacified by the invader? I can't.

Supporting and defending a politician "at all costs" is a dangerous proposition anyway.

I have said all I am going to say. You know what said and so do I. Also, you are still wrong about Ford. You are basing your opinion on hearsay and other false things. Just like a person in another thread, you can't give me five things that make him a Repub. You can't because it is not true. Congress makes thousands of votes a year. I don't think voting with the other side a handful of times makes you a traitor--its called mediation.

Also, your blind and reckless anti-war view is again shielding you from seeing reality and what is feasible. Do you seriously think we should cut and run now? No serious Democrat or Republican is saying that. Now if you have military credentials that out rank folks like Wes Clark and all the other high superior officers, let me know. But until then, I will trust people that know how war works and knows what is actually going on in Iraq opposed to people who don't have that experience.

20. First of all, I didn't call him a Repub.
I called him an opportunist.

Second, it's not a "handful" of votes. His voting record has a pretty dismal 60% ACLU rating, for example.

Third, yes I seriously think we should "cut and run" now, unless you prefer "cutting and running" thousands of casualties down the road -- or getting involved in an even bigger clusterfuck. What do you mean by "serious" Democrat or Republican? Ah, I see, you mean what they call "centrist" (in Democrats' case) -- or, with enough corporate support to be represented in the main stream media. See, I voted for a very serious Democrat in the primaries, who supports exactly this position.

Fourth, I never said you should "trust me". I only stated my opinion. You shouldn't trust anyone but yourself, including Harold Ford.

I appreciate it! I know I take the heat on this forum for supporting him, but I know he is a good and decent man who will make a great US Senator.

Thanks again!
