Ford on the Patriot Act
Dear (me),

Congress passed a renewal of the Patriot Act last week. I voted against it because the restrictions on our liberties were made permanent by the bill.

Now, it goes to the Senate for consideration. Below is the statement I released:

"I support a periodic review of any restrictions on the freedoms and rights of Tennesseans and Americans alike. It is unnecessarily intrusive to ask Americans to forfeit rights and freedoms indefinitely. I took the conservative approach and voted against this indefinite and liberal overreach by the federal government into our private lives.

"I did vote for a substitute which called for a periodic review of these restrictions on our liberties. Unfortunately, a majority of my colleagues wanted a permanent infringement on our rights. I could not support that."

Sincerely,

Harold

(Personally, in a race in Tennessee, I like the way he reframed the debate and turned it back on "conservative" personal responsibilities.)

1. Dont forget the non-citizens
though the permissions that the Patriot Act confer big brother to intrude into US citizens lives are egregious, the most diabolical elements are the ones that give Bushie and Co. the ability to arbitrarily detain foreign nationals impermanently for no good reason and without allowing them legal counsel.

although, sadly, I believe the retraction of these portions isnt even being considered

4. Lest We Forget
We need to remember that Adolf Hitler, seizing on the fears of communism that he instilled in the German people, convinced them and the government that they needed to "temporarily" give up a "few" of their civil rights so that he could "protect" them. He then made them permanent when the Nazi Party had control of "everything" and couldn't be stopped.

Many Nazi's even regretted that later...of course it was much too late by then.
