“I was quite honored to be asked by law enforcement and prosecutors to be lead sponsor of this bill on their behalf because of similar legislation I have handled previously,” stated Sen. Burchett. “We need to do everything we can to protect minor children from pornographers and other perverts. That certainly includes ensuring that our laws keep current with modern technology.”
Now Public Chapter 496, Acts of 2005, the bill makes changes to criminal offense statutes, including revising what activities are considered criminal offenses and creating new offenses involving sexual exploitation of minors.
Sen. Burchett said a key goal of the bill was "to give law enforcement officials and prosecutors much-needed tools to combat what is unfortunately a growing problem in an increasingly technological age. The bill now allows computer and other electronic transmissions to be defined explicitly as means to exploit or lure children. Previously, the antiquated statute did not address that issue adequately from a technological standpoint.
