Dollar General's at ease with living off the crumbs of Wal-Mart. The retailer commands a chain of more than 7,100 discount stores in 29 states, primarily in the Southern and Eastern US and the Midwest. Offering basic household items such as cleaning supplies and health and beauty aids, as well as some apparel and food, the company targets low-, middle-, and fixed-income customers. Its stores are generally located in small towns off the radar of giant discounters such as Wal-Mart. Its big-city stores (about 30% of its total) are located primarily in lower-income neighborhoods. About a third of its stores' goods are priced at $1 or less; the highest-priced products go for about $35.

Cal Turner - Former CEO (was listed as CEO on 5/5/2004)
