Jury convicts DeLay in money-laundering case

Updated 4:53 p.m.: Tom DeLay, the former U.S. House majority leader whose name became synonymous with the Republicans’ controversial rise to power in the Texas House, was found guilty this evening of laundering money in connection with the 2002 elections.

Jurors sent a note on yellow legal paper that a verdict had been reached to the judge at 4:46 p.m. They had deliberated for nearly 19 hours, since Monday afternoon.

The unanimous verdict on two criminal charges was read to a hushed courtroom three minutes later. DeLay, who moments earlier had been smiling, appeared shocked as the 12 jurors — six men and six women — reported their decision one by one.

DeLay, at one time one of the most powerful men in Washington, was charged with money laundering and conspiracy to commit money laundering. He faces a possible sentence of five to 99 years in prison and a maximum $10,000 fine on the money laundering charge, and two to 20 years in prison and a possible $10,000 fine on the conspiracy charge.

10. I posted this on the main thread
a few words from Pink Floyd

And when you loose control, you'll reap the harvest you have sown.
And as the fear grows, the bad blood slows and turns to stone.
And it's too late to lose the weight you used to need to throw
around.
So have a good drown, as you go down, all alone,
Dragged down by the stone.

15. The Verdict on DeLay: Guilty
Texas Observer 10/24/10
The Verdict on DeLay: Guilty
After hearing three weeks of testimony and deliberating for three days, 12 jurors delivered a verdict on Tom DeLay late Wednesday afternoon. They found the former majority leader guilty on both charges: money laundering and conspiracy to launder money. He faces up to 99 years in prison.

The jury was considering questions larger than the man indicted by the Travis County district attorney five years earlier. On trial in Austin was the state’s ban on corporate contributions to political candidates, and the now-defunct fundraising operation that the D.C. press corps once referred to as “DeLay Inc.”

It was DeLay’s national fundraising combine that poured more than $1 million into the 2002 election, electing a Republican majority to the Texas House for the first time since Reconstruction. The election was a prelude to the 2003 redrawing of the state’s congressional lines—a second run at redistricting after the 2000 census.

Still enjoying the after glow of DeLay post conviction happiness.

guess he gets a Christmas pass....
Postcards from the Lege blog AAS 11/30/10
DeLay sentencing delayed?

(snip)
The sentencing was scheduled for Dec. 20 but DeLay’s lawyers have a conflict on that date.

“It’s probably going to be some time in January,” said Gary Cobb, the lead prosecutor. “But that’s not written in stone.”

Cobb said court administrators are looking for when a courtroom is available.

25. DeLay trial offers a window into Washington fundraising and influence-peddling
Edited on Wed Dec-01-10 02:44 PM by white cloud
Before convicting former House majority leader Tom DeLay last week on felony charges of conspiracy and money-laundering, the Texas jury got a detailed look at the Washington rat race of corporate fundraising and influence-peddling.

27. DeLay sentencing now January 10
Postcards from the Lege blog AAS 12/3/10
DeLay sentencing now January 10

Judge Pat Priest just announced 9 a.m., Jan. 10, as the new sentencing date for former U.S. House majority leader Tom DeLay.

(snip)

Priest said he moved the sentencing date from Dec. 20 because of a scheduling conflict for DeLay’s lawyers.

(snip)
DeLay faces from two years probation up to 99 years in prison.

Lets hope for a good start to a new year! It's at the top of my Xmas wish list.
