Proposed state budget cuts would hit North Texas hard

The reaction was swift Wednesday as details of a a draft budget calling for a $31.1 billion reduction in state spending swept across Texas. Advocates for a wide range of programs warned of a debilitating erosion of services if cuts in nearly every section of the budget take effect.

After the jump is a list of some of the proposed budget cuts that could have a significant effect on North Texas.




Health and human services

Medicaid: Patients on Medicaid could have a harder time finding doctors who will accept them because of a 10 percent reduction in Medicaid provider rates. That's on top of the 1 percent reduction implemented last year.

Higher education

Community colleges: Four community colleges would be shut down statewide, including Ranger College, west of Weatherford.

Closing community colleges? The stupid in Texas is already epidemic.

5. Speaking of that

I'm taking a class at Tarrant County College this semester (it's a basic and waaaay cheaper than at the university I go to). Anywho, last night I parked next to an anti-Obama car. Lots of bumper stickers, the usual NObama, One Big Ass Mistake America, etc. I was tempted to leave a note asking if they were using any federal aid to go here, most especially student loans which he reformed. Or if they realized that Perry wants to close a bunch of community colleges. I didn't in the end, I just chuckled to myself.

Rep. Tryon Lewis, R-Odessa, spoke up for Odessa College. Rep. Warren Chisum, R-Pampa, did not take the floor to speak on the proposed closing of Frank Phillips College in his district. But afterward, he called the idea wrongheaded, praising the college's performance.

Do you think there is any possibility to get a resolution, or even a bill, to force Perry to take the Fed monies for schools? I can't help but think that there are gonna be more than a few Puke reps who will need some political cover and who really do not have that much love for Perry...

Are you kidding? No way in hell. Oh we could get a bill introduced, and my best guess would be Mike Villareal from San Antonio who is great on education issues. But the chances of the resolution/bill ever getting a hearing much less a vote are zilch.

This session is all about partisan chest puffing and there will be maiming involved. Just saying it is the sad state of the state of Texas. :(
