AAS 1/20/11Proposed budget cut raises debate over value of state technology fund(snip)
The proposed state budget, unveiled this week, would reduce the fund's current $137.4 million to $21.3 million for the next two years.
That's almost a rounding error in the overall $156 billion budget proposal, but it could become a call to arms for free-market advocates versus conservatives who favor government incentives for business.
Michael Quinn Sullivan, the director of Texans for Fiscal Responsibility , argues that low taxes, a reasonable legal environment for business and minimal regulations are true incentives for economic development. He criticizes programs like the Emerging Technology Fund as corporate welfare.
"I don't recall the government program that launched Dell Computers," Sullivan said. "Let's let the marketplace do it, not the government spending other people's money."
Something we can actually agree with them on. This is corporate welfare!
