But activists, celebrities and even the federal government are concerned about the effects it could have on our air and water. News 4 WOAI Trouble Shooter Jaie Avila investigates the process known as "fracking."

Avila was given a rare tour of a natural gas rig, one of many that has popped up in South Texas, as energy companies flock here to get access to a source of cleaner energy trapped in the rocks beneath our feet. It could bring hundreds of jobs to our region, but they are using a method that is controversial, and some say, dangerous.

Drilling company Pioneer Resources gave us a close up look at their drilling operation about 50 miles south of San Antonio, in Campbellton. Their rig is drilling down 8,000 feet to reach a kind of rock called shale, that contains natural gas. A massive formation, called the Eagle Ford Shale, runs from the Mexico border, up to just south of San Antonio.

"It might be the largest on-shore oil and natural gas find in the continental U.S. in the last fifty years," says Justin Furnace with the Texas Independent Producers and Royalty Owner's Association.

Earthquake hits south of San Antonio

CAMPBELLTON, Texas (KXAN) - An earthquake centered in Campbellton, Texas shook the area early Thursday morning.

Preliminary reports from the U.S. Geological Survey said the 4.6-magnitude earthquake hit at 7:24 a.m. in the area about 50 miles south of San Antonio.

The USGS world map of earthquakes shows this is the only earthquake to have happened Thursday. Many of the North American earthquakes that happened within the last week popped up in Hawaii and Alaska.

I would say fracking probably contributed to it and maybe even this horrible drought as well. When you have such a dry spell as we've had - even the rocks get drier and more brittle.

I had no idea the drillers were fracking in South Texas already. :(

I wasn't aware of the fracking OR the controversy about it last year either. But I will say that there
seems to be an awful lot of evidence mounting about the detrimental effects of this fracking practice and
there's probably no coincidence that this 'eartchquake' happened where this is taking place. In fact
this fracking/drilling relationship to earthquakes has come up before in other parts of Texas and yet
it STILL goes on!

Back in Campbellton, I put those concerns to Justin Furnace, who acts as a spokesman for Pioneer Resources and other drilling companies. I asked Furnace if fracking is a threat to our water.

"Absolutely not," he replied. . . .

Drilling companies claim there's no truth to another concern about fracking: A recent study found hydraulic fracturing could be the cause of small earthquakes in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area the past couple of years. The EPA is currently investigating the process of hydraulic fracturing, but the energy companies say they're confident it will be deemed safe, and will be a big part of America's energy future.

and it doesn't seem the EPA stands up to the oil/gas companies. These are multi-billion dollar companies and
deals such as this one tells me they feel VERY confident that they can go ahead and do as they please.
The big money is on natural gas blasted from shale rocks.

Earthquake? Are we fracking up? Ok so there has been some quake history in the past. Always good to make sure that an area that is supposed to be prone to this activity doesn't have more because of the fracking.

I would say keep on top of it and don't let them say it's Mother Nature just being Mother Nature. At least without more study on their part too. Keep records of all the activity you notice.
