MONTPELIER — Fifteen years ago, Burlington Mayor Peter Clavelle led a march celebrating the 10th anniversary of the communist overthrow of Nicaragua's brutal dictator.
To the state's Republican Party — which on Tuesday released newspaper accounts of the march in July 19, 1989 — Clavelle's participation in the pro-Sandinista celebration is yet another example of the Progressive-turned-Democrat's radical leftist agenda.
"From day one, Peter Clavelle engineered a negative campaign based on political affiliations," said state GOP chairman James Barnett, referring to the mayor's strategy of portraying Gov. James Douglas as an adherent of President Bush.
"If that's the campaign he wants to run, then it is only fair that he should have to account for his own highly objectionable affiliations that show him to be out of the mainstream for Vermont Republicans and Democrats alike."
