(AP) - An independent advocacy group from last year's bitter presidential campaign is contemplating a role in Virginia's campaigns for governor this year.
Because Virginia places no restrictions on campaign contributions or spending and because it is one of only two states that elect governors this year, so-called 527 groups could wage a political shootout in Virginia, campaign and party officials said Tuesday.
Steve Rosenthal, chief executive officer of the anti-Bush Americans Coming Together, said the idea of working in off-year state or local elections might appeal to the organization.
"Part of what is intriguing about 2005 and 2006 is that there are many states where state law would allow us to coordinate with state candidates," Rosenthal said in a telephone interview.
