High school’s teen Democrats have hit the ground running
CHESAPEAKE — In the heart of Republican country, some high school students of a different political persuasion are making waves.
Not many high school students can claim to have the ear of Gov. Mark R. Warner. Few can host a dinner and actually draw the governor, local leaders and a slew of state senators and delegates. Even fewer would ask former presidential candidate John F. Kerry to attend.
The
Oscar Smith High School Young Democrats, a relatively new club of about 15 students, have managed to book Warner as their guest speaker at a March 18 dinner.
“Gov. Warner is happy whenever he learns of young people getting engaged in civic activities and saw this as a great opportunity to offer some support and encouragement,” said Kevin Hall, the governor’s spokesman.

The dinner, scheduled for 6:45 p.m. and complete with an ice sculpture of a donkey, is expected to draw both Republicans and Democrats. They’ve invited Kerry of Massachusetts, but his office has yet to respond to the invitation.

perhaps some networking betwen other city and state high schools would be worthwhile, too
The “Jefferson Jackson” dinner at Oscar Smith High School is expected to draw about 300 people, including a host of elected officials from Sen. L. Louise Lucas and Del. Lionell Spruill Sr. – both Democrats – to Chesapeake Sheriff John Newhart, a Republican, and Portsmouth Sheriff Gary Waters, a Democrat.since when did Sheriff Newhart become a Republican?
my Sr. year's gov't class mock election at Smith pitted Bobby Kennedy v. Milhous ... Bobby won ... so, it really doesn't set well to read the first 6 words of the article:
"In the heart of Republican country...".
