Kerry was the first Democrat to win Albemarle County since 1948

The last time this county voted Democratic for president was in Harry Truman's election in 1948. They never voted for LBJ, Carter or Clinton. Albemarle includes the college town of Charlottesville, but until last November that was never enough to push the Democrats over the top county wide. This time the turnout in Charlottesville on Kerry's behalf was huge:

These are the types of communities that Texieria and Judis say are key to rebuilding a Democratic majorities: hi tech communities made up of educated professionals. Their book cites Virginia as a likely candidate for a possible Democratic victory someday. With many non-native southerners, government employees and educated professionals, Virginia could be a winnable state for Democrats in the future.

1. This happened in Charlotte, NC too!

Mecklenburg county was not exactly a Kerry landslide (52%-48% as opposed to your 72%-27%) but he was the first Democrat, I believe, to carry the county since FDR. Perhaps Charlotte is beginning to be of the same makeup.

2. Kerry spent $25,000 at the end in Virginia and he won a few counties

in that state that haven't gone Democrat in a long time.
