Leslie Byrne is a liar
Edited on Fri May-06-05 07:45 PM by secretdj
or she has an overzealous whisper campaign. In trying to out-liberal the rest of the Lt. Governor field, especially her chief opponent Chap Petersen, she taylors the facts to whoever is in front of her. This is pretty much a two person race so most of the references are Leslie vs. Chap.

Example #1 - Chap is anti-labor... no proof presented, but the local Byrne person said she's concerned about his labor record. Well, the AFL-CIO of Virginia gave him a lifetime 89% rating. Byrne has no rating online since she's been out of office so long. But she did vote for GATT and the unions were against that. Byrne also hints Chap will support a Right to Work act, but in a really vague underhanded manner like, "I heard at some forum he may have said it." So it must be true! Too bad the Virginia act was passed in 1947 20 years before Chap was born!

More to come! In regards to the Lieutenant Governor, I was sitting on the sidelines, but I'm in now and firmly set against Byrne.

2. Well, it IS a two-person race in the primary.
Don't think Viola Baskerville will make a strong showing. Can't recall offhand if a 4th person tossed their hat into the ring, or just those 3.

But as for Leslie, when she was a State Senator, she had a lot of labor support.

And I can tell you that I know Chap Peterson has turned off a lot of Dem women voters with some of his votes in Richmond, me included.

Chap will probably do better in the Tidewater than Leslie.

I've met them both and while I am not nearly as enthused over my choices as I was a few years ago (Tim Kaine), I'll take Leslie over Chap in this race.

It'll be an interesting primary, no doubt.

3. Leslie Byrne and Viola Baskerville
Leslie Byrne has done more for the environment and for labor than Viola Baskerville and Chap Petersen have done combined. I don't
know much about Petersen, but I live in Baskerville's district
and there's no more arrogant and dismissive Democratic Party politician in Virginia. Baskerville's staff never replies to constituents' letters, and that means she has hired incompetent staff which reflects on her, or it shows that she has no regard
for other people's opinions other than her own.

4. I like Chap Petersen's proposal to link all the VA cities via high speed
rail. It would get so much traffic off the roads. It would make my trips to the Tidewater area MUCH better.

5. I like that too
If he got that in to place, I would be able to travel to some parts of the state that Ive never been to like the Tides, Richmond, and hell never been to Roanoke.

6. Between NoVa and Richmond?
That would be nice, but at what price?

Regular train service is already too steep.

We need to keep the public transportation fares low to keep more cars off the roads. Rt 95 is getting to be too much to deal with.

8. Baskerville for Lt Governor
The more I think of it Viola Baskerville would be the perfect choice for the Democratic Party to nominate as it's choice for Lt. Governor of the Commonweath of Virginia, especially when you consider the job reqquirements. The Lt. Governor is a do-nothing job, and considering Baskerville's tenure in the House of Delegates the job would fit her perfectly. Not only does she stiff her constituents in her district, why not elect her state-wide so she can stiff the rest of the state?

9. Baskerville for Lt. Governor
I'm surprised to hear your appraisal of Ms. Baskerville. That hasn't been my experience at all. I live in her district and I've been pleased with her positions on the issues I track. She has been a great friend to the gay and lesbian community too.

11. Viola Baskerville
I wish I could say different. Maybe the problem is with her staff and not her. As a Richmond resident I would like to see two elected officials from Richmond as Governor and Lt. Governor so Richmond's needs would be represented more in the state house than they are now. I just wish Baskerville would be more responsive to her constituents than she has been in the past. Maybe her campaign can prove that she can be.

21. Ditto
I made the trek out to the Fairfax County Gov. Center to vote early for her. It would be nice to have a Lt. Gov of color if we are to truly represent the state

10. So is Thelma Drake.....
I'm still reeling from our David Ashe loss in that campaign in our district. Though am hoping her connection to Delay will take her down in 2006 ! Nasty Republicans. I'm so sick of their hate campaigns.

18. Chap for Lt. Governor
Even though I am a constituent of Viola Baskerville I think Chap has the better chance to win against a Republican in the General Primary, plus I don't think Baskerville has been very effective.
