1. MoveOn Rally - Speaking Vigil - Monday, 5/16/2005
Monday, May 16, starting at noon, we're organizing round-the-clock, 24-hour speaking vigils, called The People Speak, to send a message that senators should do the right thing. The rally will be held at the Federal Court House, 1000 E. Main Street, Richmond, VA.

For weeks we've been building up to the Senate showdown over judicial nominations. By all accounts a vote on the "nuclear option" to grab absolute power and force through extreme judges is now imminent: according to Republican Senate leader Bill Frist, it could well be next week. We need to turn the heat way up on swing senators. This is not a drill!

We are one of a small number of Americans who can make the biggest impact: Senator Warner is one of a handful of votes still up for grabs. Please sign up now for a 1-hour slot to join us in Richmond, and if you're up for it, to read the Constitution or other texts aloud:

This is only being done in a few states because these are the MOST important places in the whole U.S. as far as this issue is concerned. You happen to live here — you can make a major impact by coming out for an hour or two, even if it means losing a little sleep.

We're following an inspiring example. At 11:00 a.m. on April 26 a group of students at Princeton University in New Jersey started a round-the-clock speaking vigil (to simulate a filibuster), outside a campus building named for the family of Senator Frist. Through rain, exams and the dead of night their speeches have continued for more than two weeks non-stop with visits by celebrity professors including a Nobel Prize-winning physicist, congressmen, senators and lots of students.

The People Speak is an important way to demonstrate broad opposition to the Republican drive for absolute power. The judges that Republican leaders are trying to force through would serve for life, threatening our environment, our right to privacy, and even basic workers' rights like the minimum wage and the 40-hour work week. Senator Warner has already expressed deep reservations about the rule change, but is under intense pressure from the Republican leadership. That's why you need to act right away!

Being part of The People Speak is easy. At a minimum, you can stand with us and show your support to your community and the media. If you're willing to do a little more, you can sign up to read aloud for a little while — from the Constitution, Declaration of Independence, important Supreme Court decisions — anything that celebrates our democracy.

Either way, please sign up today, we can't do it without you. Click here:

Thanks ahead of time.

2. Welcome!
Thanks for the information! I went out there at noon. Nice crowd, good response from the people driving by, channel 8 came by. I could only stay about an hour but it was a great time.

3. Thanks
Glad you could stop by. It went very well. We had at least ten people there until 5:00 am. Then it quieted down until about 11:00 am. At noon Tuesday when we closed up, we were all satisfied. Of course if we "win" I will feel terrific and if not, I know I did all I could!

Around 4:00 am a couple of young men were skateboarding by. It turned out they were film students at VCU and shot our group. It was fun. I really should write something for the paper about it. Right now I am a little too tired to think. :-)
