Personal Property & Car Tax bitchfest |
|
Edited on Tue Jun-01-04 12:50 PM by crozet4clark
I hate this state.
As if it isn't enough, between the county taxes and the DMV, the gouging of personal property tax has me as mad as a hornet today. They frickin nickel and dime you to DEATH here, $25 for a county decal, my CAR costs almost $400 a year in g.d. taxes!!! For a flippin' Acura, not some huge gas hog SUV or anything.
Between the f'ing real estate taxes of $1100 half year and now this f'ing personal property tax due on Friday, that's a cool $1500 clams out the window.
Thanks Virginia, you are contributing to the death of the middle class.

I'm with you all the way. And with the new budget in place, our personal property taxes will not be going down, or away, as we'd all hoped it would. I thought when we left CA we'd leave all the taxes ad regs behind...but moving to VA was a real wake-up call.

2. My parents quickly found this out the hard way |
|
They moved from Massachusetts to Arizona (a very Democrat state to a Republican one). They thought they'd save a lot of money in taxes in the transition, but boy were they wrong. Not only did they have to shell out more money in the long run, but the services they received were substandard.

3. A true assets tax should hit all assets - but then the rich might pay |
|
too much.
It is not like there is a class war going on, with the GOP and the rich "winning" at every level of taxation.

4. The tax itself doesn't bother me |
|
Too much anyway. I have an 8 year old Nissan so the tax isn't bad but I hate the decal fee. It's basically a tax saying you paid your taxes. Probably costs about 30 cents to print the things but depending on where you are they charge from 15-30 bucks for it.

6. True; and I pay half the RE taxes I used to pay in Ohio. |
|
You would pay them too if you lived there! Indiana also had (has?) a car tax.
When you add everything together, our tax burden is reasonable, especially for the privilege of living in a beautiful state. I hate writing those checks too but it could be a lot worse.

7. PS, you should suggest that the legislators increase the cigarette tax. |
|
Before the recent increases, we has the lowest rate in the country--I think it was 2 or 3 cents a pack. It will rise to 20 or 30 cents, but this is still about half what Maryland and the District residents pay. If we got more revenue from the cigarette tax, you would pay less in other taxes.
