Editor, Times-Dispatch: Letter-writer Roger Sullivan accurately describes the unsatisfactory situation that the Virginia Department of Veterans Affairs found itself in when Mark Warner took office. Please note: The Warner administration inherited the situation -- it did not create it, as Sullivan implies. The Gilmore administration left this situation for Warner to fix. And fix it Warner did.
As Virginia state adjutant of the American Legion from 1988-2001, and as chairman and member of the joint leadership council of Virginia veterans' organizations for the past four years, I can attest that Warner immediately got to work on the mess he inherited from Gilmore.
The result is that the Warner administration has accomplished more for the Virginia veteran than has been seen in many years. This is coming from a dyed-in-the-wool Republican who last voted for a Democrat in 1960 -- when I voted for a fellow Irish Catholic, and fellow Naval officer, John F. Kennedy.
