Zogby says VA is now a swing state

The fact that Zogby is now polling Virginia as a swing state is wonderful news for those of us in the old dominion - though I must confess that living in northern virginia I never think of it as OD. Here is the posting from zogby:


"Zogby International will soon begin tracking the 2004 Presidential election in four new Battleground States: Colorado, Arizona, North Carolina and Virginia. Polling in these four states will be available as a supplementary package in addition to the 16 States already being followed. We will begin our interactive survey on August 16th and continue until October 4th. Five reports will be published (1 report in August, 2 reports in September, and 2 reports in October), examining the findings in these additional states."

I'm a transplant to Northern Virginia (not a state, a state of mind). This state was Blue in the '80's and early '90's. It's about to happen again. I run into a lot of people every week. There are quite a few former Bush supporters and a lot of Kerry stalwarts...all more than happy to start of a conversation about how much Bush sucks!!! We're ready to rumble. If it's close here, fugedaboutit elsewhere.

For those of you outside of the DC area, he was Willard! the weatherman on NBC. I'd vote for him way before I would vote for Bush.

John Edwards was in Roanoke. He doesn't have an accent when he talks to people in that area of our state. If he can hit Richmond a couple of times, maybe we have a chance.

14. Kerry bumper stickers in Richmond

There are a lot more of them than here than Gore in 2000.

Richmond is full of mouth-frothing conservatives, so a decent showing here means we're doing great in the state as a whole.

NVA is supposedly much more liberal as is the Tidewater area. The western parts of the state are hopeless, but sparsely populated.

If VA is in play, it's very bad for *.

15. A NOVA Perspective

There are many more Kerry/Edwards stickers up here than I remember seeing of Gore/Lieberman. Also, I am seeing many more yard signs in my neighborhood and in general for our ticket. One interesting note though, Many of the folks who have Kerry signs were also offered Socas yard signs but have chosen not to display them. Socas doesn't appear to be running very well here trying to defeat Frank Wolf for the House seat in Dist. 10.

23. There are yard signs in Chesapeake and bumper stickers on

64 and 264 and 664...including the one on my car...every day!

And the Steelworkers local 8888 of Northrup Grumman Newport News has endorsed Kerry...and they have held voter registration drives outside all the gates. Hang in there, VA has a chance!!!

18. I see Kerry stickers in the West End all the time.

I counted 5 on Skipwith Road and even a couple on the western part of Monument Avenue. Pretty surprising, I think.

19. You should have seen the Dem booth at the Va. State Fair last night

My wife and I worked the Dem booth again last night. It is stuck over on the side of the big expo hall for vendors and the like.

I had to run home to feed the cats and when I got back I turned the corner and BAM! They were three deep trying to get stickers, bumperstickers, yard signs, and buttons. The wife saw me and just gave me a OMG! look. They had been swamped the whole time I had been gone (about 45 minutes) and it stayed that way until about 8:30. Every once in a while their would be a brief lull and our co-volunteer and I would just look at each other and say "My God this is amazing"-she has been volunteering and observing voting sites since 1976 and she had never seen anything like it.

Even with the bad location people were seeking US out! Both nights we work the booth (tiny 7'X7' booth) we had three sets of people turn the corner by the vacuum sales guys and throw up their hands and say "HERE THEY ARE" and then come over to stock up on everything they could get-they were tired of seeing all the Bush crap around the fair.

We ran out of almost everything. One of the campaign staffers came by to take a cash drop ($300+) and he said that that was his third trip there yesterday-over 300 buttons were sold alone. I have an envelope with over $200 in it here now that we have to take of the HQ when they open.

Said while we were there:

"Do you have any 'Republicans for Kerry' bumperstickers?" ( twice-and no we didn't)

"My mother-in-law is voting for the first time in her life. She is 76 and she said she had to do SOMETHING to get Bush out of office"

Lots of talk about the debate (from all ages) most saying how WELL Kerry did and everyone reciting their favorites W dumbass moment.

We registered 11 news voters last night after 5 PM and yes I checked to make sure they were filled out properly.
-"Can I vote here?" We registered her.
-Just as we were leaving the mother (I think) of a one of the VERY well informed young couple came by and registered. Her husband wouldn't because he didn't want to get jury duty.

Lots of you kids coming to get stuff and ask how they could volunteer.

One women with a big Bush sign came over to get a Kerry sign-she said that she and her husband were surely going to get in a fight on the way home. I told her to make sure he knew to vote on Wednesday November 3rd (she cracked up on that one).

Several long discussions with people-they really just wanted to say outloud what has been on their minds for a long time. This happened both days we were there.

"How can anyone vote for Bush?" said by many people of all ages and every description you could imagine including a guy who "works at the Pentagon" (that is as specific as he would be).

Lots of Veterans (we only had 5 "Veterans for Kerry" buttons left)

As we were taking in the sights at the fair (2 hours before our shift) one of the guys working the games came over and shook my hand. He pointed to my t-shirt and said "That's my man he could lead me in battle any day of the week"-a retired Marine with 23 years in, from Little Rock originally.

The jewelers next to us (with Bush/Cheney bumpersticker on there big sign) had to sit there and listen to all this, one was two feet from our booth so she couldn't help but hear it. The shot us nasty looks for most of the night. I hope they learned something.

WOW! If this is but one small indication things really are looking good for Kerry and Edwards.

22. I see a lot of Kerry sticker and yard signs in Hampton Roads

and it's heartening to see...so I put a sticker on my car too and hope it helps trigger confidence in my fellow voters. Too often people who live in a die-hard red state give up or don't bother to vote because they think it's a waste of time.

in VA this time!! Sometimes you actually see two or three Kerry bumperstickers at one stoplight here in Richmond. If you ever saw a Gore/Lieberman sticker in 2000 it was a rarity here in the home of the mouth-foamers.

I'd be really surprised to see it in Hampton Roads. In the actual city of Richmond it definitely seems to be leaning Kerry, my neighborhood is neck-deep in Kerry signs/bumper stickers.

29. My husband and I had to drive down to....

...Nauticus in Norfolk on Saturday. Very few signs or bumperstickers of any kind. A few Kerry/Edwards next to Bobby Scott Signs. We stopped for gas and my husband went to pay wearing his permanent until the election accessory..."Veteran for Kerry" button. The guy behind him indicated support for Kerry and was very appreciative of the bumpersticker we gave him. (Always carry bumperstickers and buttons in your car or pocket.) When we got to Richmond I rented "F 9/11" to watch again and gave it to an undecided neighbor who was happy to get it to watch.

30. Chesterfield Co - GOP Stronghold

Chesterfield County, south of the James around Richmond, has had more Dem activity (yard signs, bumper stickers, rallies, etc) then I've seen in the previous 4 Presidential elections combined.

Statewide, the GOP is afraid that over-confidence will lead to a low turnout and put Junior's presumed victory here in doubt. Thus GOP pols such as Eric Cantor are playing down Junior's lead shown in any poll to keep the faithful hyped up.

Cantor also said in my presence that nationwide, the Presidential race is "close" and control of the Senate by the GOP is a toss up.
