Justin Timberlake trashes Virginia Beach |
|
From the Washington Post:
"I find it funny that we created such a club-friendly record in such a desolate area of the world. . . . It's nothing but strip malls and Chick-fil-A's. There's, like, one club in the whole Virginia Beach area. . . . It allowed us the opportunity to really lock ourselves in the studio and just create."
I have to admit, I COMPLETELY agree with him though I would have mentioned 7/11s. I was thrilled to leave Virginia Beach and move to Toronto. It's really a poster-community of souless suburban sprawl.

1. Isn't Justin from Tennessee? |
|
not exactly noted for it's urbane club scene.
Va Beach nightlife mostly caters to the tourists and the sailors doesn't it?

2. I was never much into that. In part, because... |
|
when I was in high school, the clubs permitted 'women' in at 18, but 'men' couldn't go in until age 21. So, since a lot of my friends were guys, that's just not something we did. Of course, the rule was to prevent sailors from getting in.
I don't go to clubs in Va. Beach or Toronto. Or anywhere else for that matter. But in Va. Beach it just seems that you are a lot of sprawl away from anything you want to do. Norfolk, because it grew in a different era, isn't as souless.
Virginia Beach has just sprawled in the last 30 years.

3. Virginia Beach is known for being a family friendly resort area (*) |
|
not a club-based Mecca.
If Justin was looking for a night scene perhaps he should have done a litte more research before booking studio time there.
(*) w/ the exception of the unfortunate way the city handled Greek Week in 1989.

4. If you're visiting Va. Beach, that's true... |
|
but they aren't nearly so interested in locals going to the beach.
Then there's that guy from Pittsburgh who rented a bike to ride on the boardwalk who was arrested and put in the cooler for several hours because he didn't have a light.
The Virginia Beach police are the nastiest I've ever encountered and I've lived in: Key West, Charleston SC, Va. Beach, Wash DC, Groton CT, Newport RI, Toronto, Canada and Moscow.
Working in politics I had a co-worker who, when he found out I was from Va. Beach told me he couldn't get over what an ugly city it was. And it is. The area near Pembroke is an improvement.
But I've never been to a Va. Beach nightclub and don't plan to.

I wouldn't say it's known for being a "family friendly" resort. While there are defintely a lot of families, the problem is that all of the hotels are mixed in with bars and when you get down to the lower numbered streets, there is a shady scene. Thus, the cruising laws and bike light rules. Unbelievable.
I haven't been to clusb there, but there are a lot of great restaurants and bars. it has actually improved over the years, but given his frame of reference from LA or NYC, sure it desolate.

6. oh well shit...if he's he said that |
|
it must be true! because i truly take timberlake to be the expert on cultural desolation
and i have to admit there is a tragic amount of suburban sprawl in Va Beach and Chesapeake, but IMO, we are not the 'poster community'...That would be Atlanta

I worked at Met Park and have been to the new stadium a couple of times.
Yes, I like Norfolk better than Va. Beach...

8. Ken Young of the Tides got a sweetheart deal |
|
from the O's....it's kinda sad to me because like so many here, the only reason i first became a mets fan was because of their connection with the tides....
The O's had been desperate for years to get an affiliate closer to home---They were in Rochester for years, and for some inexplicable reason went to Ottawa about 5 years ago (and the o's had the nerve to get shocked when they learned that no one in Ottawa cared enough about the o's to attend any Lynx games).
It will probably work out for the best, since there are so many orile fans here, but i for one will miss the mets

9. Once a Tide got called up... |
|
they kind of went 'poof' as far as the local media was concerned.
I went to a lot of games when Mookie, etc. were minor leaguers and worked at the park in the early 80s.
I hate Angelos. He kept baseball out of DC for sooo long.
