HARRISONBURG — Former President Jimmy Carter plans to discuss how to achieve peace in the Middle East as he receives an award for his humanitarian efforts.
Carter, a Nobel Peace laureate, and former first lady Rosalynn Carter are to receive the award Monday night from James Madison University’s Mahatma Gandhi Center for Global Nonviolence.
The 84-year-old former president plans to speak on “the path to peace in the Middle East” as he accepts the center’s award.
Carter has maintained a strong interest in the region, which he has visited twice this year.
He and fellow Nobel laureate Desmond Tutu were among a delegation of veteran statesmen who visited Israel, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip last month to support Israelis and Palestinians seeking peace.
