MIDDLEBROOK — The brown barn on the hill painted to look like a gingerbread house would be at home in a winter wonderland, but the occupants might be less welcome.
Sandra Gideos and her brother Thomas built the small barn to house rescued ferrets.
She realized people were setting them free after losing interest or patience with the animals, almost guaranteeing a death from traffic or predators.
"They don't have much of a chance," Gideos said. Ferrets aren't native.
Because they found only one ferret rescue facility in Richmond, Sandra and Thomas have traveled as far away as Maryland to retrieve unwanted animals.
