It's really really hot..... |
|
I hope everyone is finding ways to stay healthy in this fricken heat. Drinking plenty of water, wear a hat if you're outside....you all know the drill. This is probably the worst I've seen it for heat here in Seattle in the last 10 years. I'm certainly not a happy camper...

I've been laying low but thanks to your PSA, I just got everyone in my house a big glass of water.

2. It is really really hot. Drink water and, if you drink a lot of it, sometimes juice or gatorade stuf |
|
Make sure to drink something with some sugar in it, electrolytes, occasionally. Drink lots of water, but drink some juice, gatorade/etc every 5 containers of water as you are sweating out more than water.
If you start feeling nauseated, drink something that is not plain water as that may be the problem.
It is really really hot, even over here on the Olympic peninsula.

3. Drinking water seems like a simple suggestion... |
|
Edited on Tue Jul-28-09 02:04 PM by The empressof all
But please remind people...My SO hadn't had anything but coffee on Sun. Around 1 he seemed a bit sluggish and said he was feeling tired. Totally understandable in this heat right? I asked him if he had any water and handed him a bottle. He felt much better after getting hydrated. I'm a caffeine fiend with the coffee and Ice Tea...but everyone please remember that caffeine has a dehydrating effect so for every cup of coffee you drink ...drink some water.
Stay Cool Everyone.
And if you're looking for an Air Conditioned place to be for the day...Don't forget the Public Libraries. Most are Air Conditioned, have Wi Fi and a great selection of stuff to read.
And Drink...even if you aren't thirsty.

4. I'm watching the KIRO 7 news right now. They are running info on |
|
"cooling centers" in different areas, and I was glad to see that. Yesterday, I was thinking about elderly people and babies, as they are the most vulnerable in this kind of weather. Good to know they are getting the word out about where to go.

5. Worked at nursing home last couple eves and it is HOT. Freezing wet hand towels |
|
to hand out helped but it was miserable. It would be nice to have air conditioning, since it was so hot and fans and frozen towels only go so far.
Swollen feet, sore feet, sweat running down back, hot hot hot.

6. It's terrible and, sadly, about to get worse |
|
Water is definitely our friend (how I'd love to see some dripping from the sky right now).
A couple other ways to use it to help: Place a low bowl or tray of ice cubes in front of the fan so it (slightly) cools the air blowing from the fan
Take a cool shower before bed. If you have longer hair it'll create a damp spot on the pillow. turn over and you have a temporarily cooler spot for your cheek - might be just enough to let you get to sleep.
Eat spicy food to make you sweat more - sweat helps cool down when it evaporates.
Cant wait until our cooling evening breeze returns.
Hmm - maybe we should all go for a DU meetup in an air conditioned spot? We could all cool down and meet up at the same time.

7. The hardest part for me is keeping my dogs cool |
|
I don't mind the heat - I kind of like it - but they are miserable. We keep them in the coolest part of the house, run the fan, etc., but all those "cooling centers" are just for people. And our car doesn't have AC, so driving them to a cooler spot is not a good option either.

9. We just shaved our dog and we are getting him wet and then he is, |
|
without provocation, lying down in front of the fan. He is a standard poodle and has the standard smarts that come with that. I'll admit that he isn't real pleased with the drenchings (some water dog he is!) but he's going straight for the fan afterward, every time. I've taken to wetting myself down with clothes on and putting myself in front of a fan. It really feels better.
We also put ice in his water bowl. He loves it. We have been giving him ice cubes for snacks as well.

13. I filled a plastic container up with water today and put my dog in it. |
|
She has not been doing well in this heat, but doing that seemed to help perk her up some.
My two cats seem to be weathering the heat a little better.

Over 75 - too hot for them! Under 40 - too cold for them! I found myself wondering just what kind of kids these were!

12. I feel for all of you! |

Here in the Midwest, hot is normal in the summer. But everywhere out here is air-conditioned and most people are used to it. Out in your neck of the woods, it must be really tough! Especially after all the snow you got last winter. Next month my wife and I move to Bellingham. Hopefully you will be back to normal by then. Until the heat breaks, use your head and common sense when out in the weather. And remember the pets! hamerfan PS... Above 90 degrees, ice cream has zero calories! :P

LisaM and empress. We've vacationed there several times and thought it'd be nice for a retirement dream as well. We are still about 10 years away from retirement and my wife's asthma and allergies are getting bad in the Midwest. So we're just upping and moving. She never had a problem breathing out there. Should pull into town around August 15th. We gave it a lot of thought and now it's time to act. Best of luck out there till the heat breaks. Here in Missouri it's 77 degrees with no humidity at the end of July. Unheard of! Strange stuff going on....

I'm in Hua Hin, Thailand, and though Weather Underground says it's 86°, it feels quite pleasant, cloudy with a slight breeze.

have returned to kinda normal. My local weathercaster in Missouri showed your area in August as having slightly above normal temps and normal precip. Here's hoping they are right, although they generally can't get tomorrow's forecast right, let alone the next month! :P hamerfan

|
toward the middle of the week. We're due to hit 90 again on Sunday - better than it was, but hotter than I like. It was a huge relief that Friday was mild, especially with this dental work.
Curious, what does the "hamer" refer to?

Hamer is a brand of guitar. Especially the Hamer USA models. Very well made instruments, made in Connecticut, about 10 guys in the shop whose output is 3 guitars per week. A great buy in the used market.
