West Virginia GOP official Mike Stuart says he's breaking a party commandment by speaking out, but feels none of the candidates who have filed for candidacy against Sen. Robert Byrd really get the people enthused.
"For some reason, Republicans don't want to talk about it," said Stuart, a Charleston attorney and rumored candidate.
"The folks who have announced their interest just simply haven't excited the electorate yet. We just don't want to fill the seat with a warm body."
As the list of recognizable names of possible candidates to challenge Byrd next year dwindles, the party is scrambling to find a suitable opponent to the eight-term, legendary senator.
