Although, his past is quite troubling. Has he apologized or made any comments about regretting being a KKK member, and being against civil rights?

he has repented for those things, most importantly, in his record in the senate. he's gotten good marks on his voting record, and that above lip service is the main thing.
but it always gets an eye roll whenever i hear byrd called a "liberal" by those to whom everyone a little to the edge of jesse helms is a librul.
byrd is still fairly socially conservative, but fiscal policies lean fairly liberal. not a dixiecrat anymore.
