was reading the latest copy yesterday, and, apparently graffiti is being sold..... had no idea.
that alone was bad news, but then i looked at the column below that after wondering just who was in the running to buy graffiti, and "ogden newspapers" jumped off the page at me.....
SHIT!!
for those who don't know, this is the same outfit that owns papers like the parkersburg news & sentinel..... corporate conservative trash, these folks are.
so the future for graffiti looks bleak.
wish i had some money, it doesn't look like there'll be much of an alternative press left in west virginia after this. better try to pick up a copy of this month's issue, so you can either find out, or remember, how graffiti *was*
sorry to be a downer, but i just don't see graffiti staying much the same as it's always been.

2. Yea, I sympathize with Michael Lipton as far as the expense of operating |
|
it, but it is still sad to see it go to Korporate hands. Maybe it will be OK, but I wouldn't bet money on it.

4. lipton had been sending it down the tubes anyway |
|
hiring the fringe-right dan leroy, who used the music reviews to bash ani difranco, janeane garofalo, ministry, and anyone else anti-bush for putting politics in their music
endorsing a republican like danny jones for mayor
and hiring rightwing radio host stephen reed to write a column
this was all probably a bid to make the paper look more attractive to a potentail conservative buyer, at the expense of offering one of the few progressive outlets for opinion in wv
oh, and for no apparent reason, i'd like to mention thhat lipton is a pompous, egotistical ass

6. for some stupid reason, lipton gave him more time to voice his opinions |

funny how no one ever calls grafitti on selling out. lipton is still practically worshipped by the elitist charleston psuedo-activist cliques
(yes, i have a strong personal grudge here)

9. i'm not going to get too personal |

but the usual faces in the charleston social cliques-whose idea of activism is to hold retreats with the same 15 people and then send us photos of it in their newsletters.

who you are talking about. There really aren't that many activist groups in Charleston. I think I can safely say they would love for you to be the 16th person to show up. Or the pro choice activist would love for you to be the 3rd or 4th person to show up at the capitol on pro choice day.

8. You think so? Most people I know share your opinion. Still Grafitti was |

one of the only left leaning papers in the state. Remember the Gazette endorsed Underwood over Pritt, what hypocrites! I told my wife that if Underwood won I would NEVER buy another copy of the Gazette. He did and I never did.
I don't blame them for selling. With every new issue I was amazed Graf was still operating, given the number of publications like that have come and gone over time. I think it is almost impossible for an independantly owned paper to stay afloat anymore.

11. not from wv anymore.... |
|
but that is terrible!!
my sisters bands first written review was in graffiti.
although it has gone down hill since then, but still graffiti was the best option for alternative publications:-(
but I can't say i ever saw anything bad with mike lipton, though I only met him once.
sorry to hear my home-state's best paper is going down though:-(

i'm sad to see it change hands as well and even sadder now having read the "new" version... feelings for the former editor aside (and i have none really), he deserves kudos for making it last so long...he took a risk and produced a fine paper with a strong voice and he did it for much longer than anyone expected and i would assume made little to no profit from it as well. someone referred to him as a sell-out and i think that's ridiculous and just plain sad -- anyone who has seen where the paper ran or talked with any of the writers knows that it was very much a grassroots effort and a labor of love. it is a voice that will sadly be missed by me and many others throughout the state.
