CHEYENNE -- Torrington, Riverton and Rawlins cleared the first hurdle Monday in their drives to become the site of a new 650-bed medium-security prison.
Worland and Lincoln County failed to make the first cut and are out of the running.
Wyoming Department of Corrections Director Bob Lampert said all five proposals were well done. He said the committee that analyzed the community plans concentrated on the physical characteristics of the sites first, and then a basic look at the communities to determine whether they would be suitable for the prison.
The committee will now look more in detail at the communities and the services they can provide.
Using a "matrix" with characteristics considered important for prison siting, the committee scored Torrington's proposal at 81 percent, Riverton's at 77 percent, and Rawlins' at 75 percent. The scores will be carried over into the second phase, Lampert said.
