A special Olympic moment with Walter Gretzky |
|
Edited on Fri Feb-12-10 01:52 PM by glarius
I'm watching the Olympic torch coverage on CTV. They just had a shot of Walter Gretzky (father of the great hockey player, Wayne Gretzky as I'm sure you all know) carrying the torch for a spell in Vancouver. It reminded me of an incident in my life about 11 years ago. My mother was ill in hospital in the southern Ontario town where we live. I arrived at the hospital to visit her and as I was walking down the hall I noticed at the far end of the hall, Walter Gretzky talking to a nurse. I said to a nurse near me, "Isn't that Walter Gretzky?" She told me that he often called in unannounced with toys to give to the kids in the children's ward. He never had a photographer or anyone with him to publicize what he was doing. Just doing good in his own quiet way. As I'm writing this he's at the end of his run, with some other torch bearers, belting out "O Canada". By the way, he has a terrible singing voice....hahaha. God bless you Walter, you're a dear old man!
:toast:
P.S...I think Michael J Fox will be the last one with the torch!
