Put money in hands of seniors, Layton tells PM

The corner store will be the cornerstone of the economic recovery in Canada if Jack Layton has his way.

After a meeting with Prime Minister Stephen Harper this afternoon, the NDP Leader called for the next wave of stimulus funding to go to Canada’s elderly, especially senior women.

“He can keep giving tax cuts to the big banks and oil companies, or he can put some of that money to those who need it the most, who will then spend it in the local economy,” Mr. Layton said. “Let me tell you where the seniors will spend it – they will spend it at their local corner store, which will allow small businesses to be able to hire more employees, who will then pay taxes and help us get out of this deficit.”

The NDP has also been calling for the Conservatives to rescind corporate tax cuts, but Mr. Layton said he received no assurances that the Conservatives will move on that front in the March budget.

The elderly vote in droves, the youth does not...but any spare money we have should go to education, not corner store claptrap.

6. The same old talk

I would love to live in a country that the elderly are better taken care of, and get the best financial breaks. Guess what? The Conservatives and the Liberals don't care , because other than Seniors votes they are useless to the Cons and Libs. These two political parties don't care about anything but pushing their neoliberalistic agendas. They don't care about the young, the sick, the old, aboriginals, the disabled, minority groups, social problems, health care, the north, etc. etc. etc. The only thing they care about is capitalism, their powerful allies and friends, and pushing their right wing ideals onto the voters.

Can the NDP do any better... can Jack do any better..... he puts himself out there, saying things that get him ridiculed and criticized because it is different than the status quo, but socially, and morally correct. He likely represents what a lot of Canadians feel. Why don't the majority of Canadians vote for him? A lot of people that can vote simply don't vote. As well, most voters are clueless to the nature of politics and vote for who they think the winner will be. Or they hate one guy so much they vote for the media perceived opponent that is most likely to beat him.

Keep talking loud Mr. Layton. Not everyone will like what you say, but at least someone is speaking up.

"Politicians are like diapers. They both need changing regularly and for the same reason." - a little quote I found.

To assume that politicians were anything less than people would be foolish. People have agendas. Liberals and Conservatives are more similar then dissimilar, and these two political parties have run Canada for the majority of it's existence. Both are neo-liberalistic, so I refer to them as the same. If to communist parties were essentially the same I would refer to them that way too.

My point is that the NDP are the only relevant alternative to the neo-liberalistic Libs. and Cons. I can't say I'm that impressed by past NDP provincial governments drifting away from social democracy towards third-way policies, but they pose a better option than capitalistic/neo-liberals.

The ideals of the NDP are more equitable and distribute power and wealth more equally. Other countries with social democratic governments have not only a far better quality of life, but have also weathered the economic storm we are in, far better than any country where capitalism drives all aspects of existence. I suspect that most Canadians want better services, more equality, improved health care and a stable economic climate - not the unstable ups and downs that capitalism has proven over the past several decades.

That said, it will be our friends, family and neighbors that will not bother to become informed, or vote out of fear of change and continue to support neo-liberalistic opportunistic politicians.

My overall point in everything is that I approve of Jack Layton talking about injustices and social misfortunes that can and should be solved in our society. The man has some expectation for improvement and voices those concerns to the people that need to hear them.

and people who can actually be effective.

To most people a vote for the NDP is a wasted vote, and lecturing them won't change that.
