“Just because there’s an operating freeze doesn’t mean we will stop hiring. We know it is important to continue to hire and we can’t renew the public service if we don’t hire, especially with the attrition going on.”
But that didn’t square with MPs who have initiated a study into the impact of the government’s three-(year) hiring freeze on the demographics of the public service and the services they deliver to Canadians.
The government announced in the March 4 budget that the size of the public service would shrink. As a result, MPs wanted more specifics and prodded Treasury Board and Privy Council officials for a plan on how the freeze will be managed.
Opposition MPs were clearly frustrated that Treasury Board isn’t tracking how many jobs will be lost and where or how the squeeze will affect services.
