OTTAWA—Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s handling of the Helena Guergis file prompted renewed criticism after the Parliamentary ethics watchdog said she had not been formally asked to investigate the former cabinet minister’s conduct.
Ethics commissioner Mary Dawson took the unusual step of publicly calling into question Harper’s statement last week that he had referred allegations concerning Guergis to the commissioner’s office.
“The Prime Minister did not make an official request for an investigation” concerning Guergis, Dawson wrote on her website, adding the PMO did not provide details of the allegations. The commissioner announced earlier this week that she was not pursuing an investigation.
