Gun control advocates in Quebec say they will hold the NDP accountable if the national registry does not survive a highly anticipated House of Commons vote on Wednesday.
Quebec's lone New Democrat MP and deputy leader Thomas Mulcair can expect sharp retribution if the registry is scrapped, advocates say — even though he supports the program.
"He is a member of the party, and it's the party that controls the fate of the bill," explained Coalition for Gun Control co-founder Heidi Rathjen, a survivor of the 1989 Montreal Polytechnique massacre.
"I don't know how hard he worked
, I am sure he did. But unfortunately, he represents the party in Quebec, and he has to make sure the registry is saved if he wants to save his reputation in Quebec on the issue of public safety."
