OTTAWA - Opposition parties are stepping up the pressure on the Harper government to reverse its decision to scrap the compulsory long-form census.
The Liberals plan to propose a motion Tuesday calling on the government to reinstate the mandatory long census, while removing the threat of jail time for those who refuse to fill it out.
All three opposition parties are united in support of the motion.
The Liberals also intend to introduce a private member's bill this fall that would make the long census mandatory under the Census Act.

First; because the compulsory long-form census is key to funding, research, etc. and second; it will add to the losing streak the Cons are on -losing the gun registry vote; outrage over the excesses re G8/G20 and, it seems likely, losing the vote against the Liberal's private member bill on long-form census.
