The Canadian government has endorsed the transition plans set out by Hosni Mubarak’s regime even though it has been rejected by much of the country’s pro-democracy forces.

Foreign Affairs Minister Lawrence Cannon signalled that fears about what kind of government a quick transition might bring are first and foremost in Ottawa’s policy, including concerns that a new Egyptian regime might break a peace treaty with Israel. ...

Mr. Cannon indicated the Harper government favours that slower-transition plan.

“I think the question is what’s next. A vacuum does not mean transition. The transition must be orderly, we have said it from the beginning. And these things must be settled by the Egyptians themselves,” he told reporters outside the Commons. ...

The comments appear to set the Canada at odds with the U.S. and several other Western countries ...
