Four Mounties involved in a fatal confrontation with Polish immigrant Robert Dziekanski will face charges of perjury in relation to the evidence each officer gave at the Braidwood inquiry into the 2007 incident, the provincial criminal-justice branch said Friday.
Richard Peck, the special prosecutor on the matter, said the charges will proceed with direct indictment, which rules out a preliminary hearing.
News of the charges came in a statement from the Criminal Justice Branch, which said they decided to release the information because they had heard that there were about to be media reports on Mr. Peck’s decision.
The statement also said Mr. Peck had concluded there was no substantial likelihood of conviction in relation to the circumstances of the physical struggle between police and Mr. Dziekanski or investigation into his death.
