In leading a series of major high-profile investigations over the past decade, he has become one of the country's best known officers, nicknamed affectionately "Yates of the Yard".
The 50-year-old Assistant Commissioner is regarded by senior colleagues as a dogged, reliable, straight-talking officer of exceptional ability.
