Andrew Lansley accused of burying poll showing record satisfaction with NHS

"Ministers have been accused of "burying good news" about the NHS because it will undermine their case for sweeping reforms, after it emerged that they are withholding unpublished polling data that shows record levels of satisfaction with healthcare.

The Observer has learned that the polling organisation Ipsos MORI submitted the results last autumn to the Department of Health for inclusion in a government survey of public perceptions of the NHS. The data, commissioned by the department, shows that more members of the public than ever believe the NHS is doing a good job – a finding contrary to health secretary Andrew Lansley's insistence that it is falling short and needs urgent change."

3. I still recall the piece that the Guardian ran in the summer of 2008

about a man who fell off his roof, broke his leg in several places, and was treated by the NHS, including two surgeries, at no out-of-pocket cost. He had some complaints, but on the whole, he was satisfied with his care

He then asked his in-laws in Texas to ask their doctor how much such a course of treatment would cost in Texas. The answer came back--$79,000. (My brother's a doctor, and he think that sounds low, but we're in Minnesota and Texas is well, Texas.)

Then there were the fascinating readers' responses to that Tory who went on Fox News and claimed that everyone in the U.K. hated the NHS.

There were over 800 of them, and since my business was in a slow period and I was intensely interested in the subject, I read all of them. About 2/3 of the writers, including those who had experienced both the U.S. and British systems, either as Brits living in the States or Americans living in the U.K., favored the NHS. Of the critics, most said, "I'd prefer the Canadian system" or "I'd prefer the French system" or "I'd prefer the Swedish system" or something like that.

ONE person--count him, ONE--person said that he preferred the U.S. system, and do you know why? He was a doctor, and he said he could make more money in the States.
