ABC tonight, (Thursday 8th) 8.30 pm.
John Clarke on the Australian accent.
"By examining the Australian accent and discovering its story, The Sounds of Aus reveals much about the Australian psyche and our national identity. Indeed, over the last two centuries, many of the conflicts about our identity have been played out through the accent, with our vision of, and our relationship with, the world reflected in the way we speak."
As he said on Red Symons show yesterday, Aussies have five vowels; ai, ai, ai, o, u.

1. That's five more than John Clarke has when he speaks in his native tongue! |

2. I don't have any problems with John Clarke's accent |

and his native tongue is English. If that was meant to be a witty throwaway line you failed miserably.

3. His native tongue is Kiwi-English, to be precise. |

I love the man, and I thought the program was very interesting and entertaining, but I did wonder how a Kiwi, with his own unique accent, came to be doing this particular program.

4. Lighten up, Canetoad. John is claimed by NZ as a son. He is. |

Only a Kiwi would be sensitive about the vowel thing. fwiw I never mention sheep. I think it's overdone.

He's great and never stops poking the borax.. I loved that show he did about the Olympics but it screened late in the evening here.
I am in NZ so we don't see much of Clarkie nowadays.
