Is Kev's ute really worth all this fuss? |
|
Why on earth are the media devoting so much time to the so-called "Utegate" affair? This week, the Government's carbon emissions trading scheme was due to be debated, and all the Opposition can talk about is Kev's beat-up old ute and whether he tried to do a favour for a friend by having a staffer send an email to Treasury on his behalf.
So, turns out Rudd neither sent the email nor tried to get special treatment for anyone, but Malcolm Turnbull still thinks he should resign anyway. Wayne Swan didn't send the email either, although he may have given Treasury a nod to help his friend get a loan. Except that the legislation for the Ozcar loans hasn't even gone through Parliament yet. But Malcolm Turnbull thinks Wayne Swan should also resign anyway.
But now the AFP are suspicious about the email that was found on Godwin Grech's computer, and some Libs are suddenly remembering "oh, yes, that Godwin Grech", who turns out to have been a good friend to the Libs for many years, passing on whatever useful Treasury information he can to help them out. Perhaps his helpfulness also extends to manufacturing fake emails?
And Malcolm Turnbull reminds me of nothing so much as the knight in the Monty Python sketch - his arms and legs have been cut off, but he's still jumping about on his stumps calling for Kevin Rudd or Wayne Swan (or anybody but himself) to resign.
Peter Costello must be hitting his head on his desk and wishing he'd waited just a little longer to make his big retirement announcement. In one short week Turnbull's gone from being an unassailable leader to looking very much like a dickhead.
