The way the US's election system is set up and run, anybody could convince the owners of the machines to program the machines to make anyone they desired into the winner. All it would take is enough money. The programming is the easy part.
The trail of such a theft would be easily buried.

For them it is ideology, in particular abortion. The end justifies the means to them. So I doubt they could be paid off to change their alliance. Obama's best use of the money is in exposing them.

My point is that theft is always a possibilty the way things are set up.
