VFW Fire Shuts Down Route 22 In Westmoreland
Fire Crews Battle Flames In Derry Township
DERRY TOWNSHIP, Pa. -- Traffic on Route 22 in Derry Township was at a near-standstill early Monday afternoon, as firefighters blocked off the road while they battled a fire.
A photo posted by a viewer on WTAE Channel 4 Action News' Facebook page shows smoke pouring out of the Blairsville VFW.
A woman told WTAE Channel 4 Action News' Jennifer Miele that she was cleaning the kitchen at about 9 a.m. when she heard a "pop" noise behind a cooler near the VFW's bar. She saw flames and smoke and fled the building immediately.
Miele reported that the building was to have been a polling place for the Pennsylvania primary on Tuesday. But voting machines were destroyed, and the polls will be moved about two miles away to the Long's homes, a modular home company.
Route 22 is closed to traffic in both directions in the area of the fire.

This was to be a polling place tomorrow and yup, the voting machines were burned up. For my friends out of county and out of state, they were paperless ES&S iVotronics. RIP, iVotronics... we'll miss 'ya (not.)
Note: the county probably has spare machines, and the Judge of Elections for that precinct hopefully has the PEBs -- activation devices for the iVotronic containing the ballot styles for the precinct -- safely stored in his or her home. So the election will go on. I hope they vote for me! ;-)
