Middlesex. - Author Jeffrey Eugenides |
|
I'm almost to the middle (no pun intended) and am thoroughly enjoying the reading. I haven't read "The Virgin Suicides" by the same author. Have any here read either or both? Did you enjoy? "Middlesex" is a genuine feast for me. I would have to say that for genuine story-telling, this book is up there for me with "Cold Mountain" and "Accordion Crimes".

1. I thought this was a great book |
|
It's one of those I still think about every once in a while, even though I finished it ages ago.
I still haven't read The Virgin Suicides, either.

Like the first post, this is one of those books that I think of every once in a while. Wait until you get to the end.
Clearly one of the best books I have ever read.

4. I felt like it was two books in one. |
|
The first half was amazing....the immigrant family, early days in Detroit..But when the narrator comes of age, it lost me and the magic was gone. I felt like I had read two different books by two different authors...

5. hmmm - interesting .... |
|
esp. when the main character was, indeed, 2 different persons. perhaps that is what the author intended, but it didn't hit me that way. this author is one amazing storyteller.

6. "The Virgin Suicides" is great. |
|
It was (wrongly) attacked when it came out for being misogynistic--but only by people who think men shouldn't be allowed to write about women. Great book. Eugenides is a very funny guy in person, too.

7. I just finished this one last night. |
|
My SO had been bugging me to read it since she'd read it recently.
Wow, I really thought it was great. It's over 500 pages, but it's epic in scope spanning the 3 generations.

9. In what way? It won a Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 2003. |
|
Maybe the way it was written wasn't appealing to you personally?

... when I finally got round to reading it last year. Haven't got around to "Virgin Suicides" yet, though I liked the movie.
