I'm reading Norman Mailer's new novel |
|
"The Castle in the Forest"
I'm glad he's still writing. It's pretty interesting, so far. One of our best writers.

1. The first thing I attempted to read of his was 'Ancient Evenings' |
|
That turned me off so badly I've never picked up Mailer since - not even his 'classics' (Naked and the Dead, Executioner's Song, etc).
I know I must be missing something, but wow... 'Evenings' was SO tiresome. I quit after only 1,739 pages. (OK, it was really 100-something).
Anyway, glad you're liking it, terrya! :toast:

2. Yeah, "Ancient Evenings" was a tough go. |
|
It was like trying to slough through quicksand.
"Castle" is a little less...ambitious, I guess. It's quite readable.
Thanks, Richardo. :-)

3. I loved Ancient Evenings |
|
I read it 25 years ago and remember that I couldn't put it down. I still remember the book which is more than I can say for 95% of the books I read.
I haven't read any of his recent stuff, though.
