Evolution, Me, and Other Freaks of Nature by Robin BrandeHey DU readers, there is a new novel picking up speed out there that knocked my socks off. It's listed as a YA but I'm 39 and I couldn't put it down. My kids will be reading this one!
I am guessing that this debut author is going to take a lot of flak from the religious right and it's possible her book will be banned by some school libraries in the Bible belt -- help her out! Let's keep this book from going extinct and show her some support!
Note: While I didn't agree with every conclusion the main character came to, it was okay -- it's fiction, after all. I think progressives will be pleased. Please take a look at what the big reviewers are saying about it:
KIRKUS REVIEWS, Recommendations for Young Adult Reading Groups:
“Evolution vs. creationism, religion vs. science, the separation of church and state–Robin Brande’s buoyant story thoughtfully takes on debates both timeworn and current.”
VOYA (5Q4P):
“. . . informs as it entertains, piques curiosity, has broad appeal . . .”
PUBLISHERS WEEKLY:
“Brande tackles fundamentalist thinking and the hot-button issue of evolution vs. intelligent design in her ambitious YA debut. . . . fluid storytelling offers thought-provoking situations and ideas.”
Let me know if you give it a try! I am cuckoo-bananas over this book. It felt like a breath of fresh air. :)
