My 2nd book, FADE (Wake, Book 2), is out and just landed on the NYT bestseller list! |
|
WAKE (also a NYT bestseller) is the first book in the paranormal trilogy about 18-yr-old Janie who gets sucked into people's dreams.
FADE came out last week and hit the NYT bestseller list -- just found out today. There will be a link eventually, but it's not available yet.
Thanks to all of you who have been so supportive over the past couple of years! :pals:
xox Lisa
P.S. I'll be touring San Diego, L.A., San Francisco, Cincinnati, and NYC at the end of March/early April. Would love to meet you. Tour details at the link in my sig.

Ok, I'm checking out Amazon, and omg, my girls have asked me for this book! They read an insane amount so I'm gonna add it to the wishlist. And, um, they beta read. Just sayin'. LOL

would thank you if you needed a beta or two lol. :) They have beta'ed for a few friends of mine. One is published but not in YA, one is with Simon Pulse, and one is awesome but hasn't managed to sell yet. They love PC and Kristin Cast, Meyer (of course), Richelle Mead, Anne Bishop, and lots more. I was very happy to see them both inhale the Bishop books. I love her stuff. And I know PC Cast (and her work) so that's very cool too! (She probably doesn't really know me tho lol!!) I just like encouraging the reading really and since I know so many writers I get to throw them into the YA beta pool a lot lol!
A breakout would be awesome, but I'm not complaining if it doesn't happen. I was able to quit my edj last year on my royalties lol. It's all good right now. Forth quarter and Jan numbers looked good to me. We'll see how the rest of the year goes. I think I've finally accepted this isn't anything I have any real control over. I may have to look at a job later this year and if I do, well, what can you do? I finally decided to just deal with now and let the rest work out later.

As opposed to the writer wanna-be kestrel91316, whose only claim to fame is two magazine articles (though I will brag that they got picked up by the first mags I sent them to, unsolicited).

Is it appropriate for a 13 year old who reads above her age? She devoured the entire four Twilight books in 5 days!
How about an 11 yr old boy who loves sci fi and historical fiction?

23. age appropriateness... |
|
S&S has a "14 and up" recommendation on the cover.
That said, my daughter turned twelve in October and I just let her start reading them -- she flew through WAKE without any issues (and she's my innocent one who will put something down if it disturbs her). She just stared the second one. All her friends are reading & loving them too -- 7th & 8th graders. There is some coarse language and some sexual references. Probably nothing the 13 yr old hasn't heard/read before if she's reading above her age.
The 11 yr old boy...it depends. You might want to read it first to determine that.

I just read both of them a couple of weeks ago. I keep up on young adult literature, since I teach middle school. My students do book discussions on the books they are reading; I have a recommended list, but they are free to read outside of that list, as well. I have to have read what they are reading to keep up with the discussions.
To be honest, I've had just about enough discussion of the Twighlight series as I can take for awhile. ;)
Anyway, I was reading the twilight series, since those are the books all the girls want to discuss, and there was a bit at the back of one of them, one of the "if you liked this book, you might enjoy..." that listed Wake. So I read it, and Fade.
I won't put them on my recommended list (I can't recommend books with sexual content, no matter how mild.) Not that middle schoolers aren't familiar with sexual content, lol. It just can't come from me. My students have access though; our county library allows them to check out and return anything in the county to our little school, and that's where I found them. They will find them sooner or later themselves. :D
I will tell you that I REALLY liked the books. Fast reads, which matter to my students, engaging, engrossing, current, and well-developed enough to have a decent discussion. I'm looking forward to hearing what they think about them.
Er...
Are you planning to let us in on where Janie's life takes her, and how she deals with her dilemma revealed in "Fade" at any point in the future?

I love hearing stories like these. And I understand your dilemma as far as recommending the books to middle schoolers.
I'm so glad you liked them!
And yes, there will be a third and final book about Janie, called GONE. I'm writing it right now. It's due on shelves in spring 2010. :)

I am sorry that I haven't replied to all. It's been a bit crazy with the list and with a tough deadline coming up for the next book (which I'm so excited about).
But I want to assure you all that I am so grateful for your support. I remember the warm welcome I received here at DU a few years ago...before I knew I'd write a novel that somebody actually wanted to publish. And now I am experiencing it again. Thank you.

If you win a publisher-sponsored contest, it might happen. I think there are a very few YA publishers that still take unsolicited mss, but I don't know who they are. I'd suggest checking this book for info on that: http://www.amazon.com/2009-Childrens-Writers-Illustrators-Market/dp/1582975493/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1235960895&sr=1-1But I would highly recommend an agent. A good one is more than worth the commission. And with editors dropping like flies these days, being laid off, it's good to have somebody fighting for you in case you get orphaned.

One of my more voracious readers discovered "Wake." She read it, recommended it, and passed it on to another reader. 8th graders. I predict that about half of them will have read one or both books by the time school lets out. :D
